Migraines, Tension Headaches and TMJ

A Migraine is a common type of headache that may have a variety of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. In many people, a throbbing pain is isolated to one side of the head. Some patients suffering from migraines have warning symptoms, known as auras, before the actual headache begins.

TMJ, TMD, and Myofascial pain refer to different pathologies affecting the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related facial structures. The TMJ and its associated muscles control chewing and movement of the jaw. It is a hinge joint connecting the mandible to the temporal bone of the skull. TMJ pain is often the result of issues with the joint and/or surrounding muscles including, but not limited to, grinding/clenching of teeth, stress in facial muscles, dislocation of the disc, arthritis or trauma to the jaw.

Symptoms of TMJ related facial pain include:

-          Pain and tenderness in the face, jaw, neck, temples and shoulders

-          Limited range of motion concerning the jaw

-          Feeling of jaw being stuck or locked in position

-          Clicking, popping sounds in the jaw when opening and closing

-          Tense muscles in the face and neck

-          Difficulty chewing or feeling teeth aren’t coming together properly

Treatment options for facial pain and headaches vary based on the type and cause of pain. It’s beneficial to utilize conservative options when treating facial pain. After receiving a proper diagnosis the treating clinician will determine what treatment plan is best.

The BIOLASE EPIC X diode laser works as a topical heating device that helps to temporarily increase your blood circulation as well as to temporarily relax your muscles. The EPIC X is then able to temporarily relieve joint pain and stiffness.

Boulinum toxins are FDA approved for the treatment of Chronic Migraine headaches. Botox and Xeomin are also used therapeutically for conservative treatment of Tension Headaches, Bruxism and TMJ.

Botox/Xeomin injections are being used more frequently in dental offices as "off label" treatments for more troublesome maladies such as TMD,TMJ and Migraines. Studies have shown patients who received these injections experienced significant improvement in pain, function, ability to open their mouth and levels of tenderness to palpation. Only your dentist can determine if you are a candidate for this treatment, the frequency of injections will depend on the severity of your condition.

Patient Education and Information

Botox® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin, a neurotoxin in the form of a purified protein.

Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) is made of a protein purified from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Xeomin is the most technologically advanced neurotoxin on the market today.

Botox and Xeomin are used esthetically to decrease the appearance of aging by reducing muscle movement. Areas of treatment include; the glabellar area (the 11's/frown lines between the eyes), frontalis muscles (forehead lines), crow’s feet, chin dimples, radial lip lines (smoker’s lines) and nose lines. Botulinum Toxin can also be used to reduce the muscle mass in the masseters (jaw line) for a slimming facial esthetic result.

As skin ages, it begins to lose collagen filled with hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA add structure and volume to the face, therefore a lack of HA causes the skin to sag and wrinkle - - that's where dermal fillers come into play.

Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels made from naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers add volume to weakened facial features and can stimulate collagen growth. Each dermal filler is unique in its own way but similar in two. First, they plump skin and gently lift it to restore collagen loss due to the normal aging process. Secondly, dermal fillers motivate the body to create its own natural collagen and restore your face to a more natural, youthful appearance.

So, If you are looking to smooth out a few fine lines, fill in deep set wrinkles or plump up your lips, injectables are for you!
